Eddystone Lighthouse Boat Trip
Step aboard Typhoon for a trip to the legendary Eddystone Lighthouse — history, sea views and wildlife all in one.
Join me aboard Typhoon for a memorable trip out to the Eddystone Lighthouse, one of the most famous landmarks in UK waters. Standing some 12 miles south of Looe, the lighthouse rises from a rocky reef out in the English Channel — a true feat of engineering and a proud part of this country’s seafaring history.
We’ll leave Looe Harbour, passing the Banjo Pier and the cottages climbing the hillside behind. Out through Looe Bay, we’ll pass Looe Island, a beautiful nature reserve that’s home to grey seals, nesting seabirds and all sorts of marine life. From there, we follow the coastline eastwards — the South West Coast Path winding above the cliffs — before heading out into open sea towards the Eddystone.
On the way, there’s every chance of spotting wildlife — gannets diving for fish, guillemots and razorbills skimming the waves, maybe even dolphins or porpoises following the boat. The sea here can be a brilliant blue on calm days, and with Cornwall’s rugged coastline fading behind, it’s a view you won’t forget in a hurry.
Once we reach the Eddystone, you’ll get a close look at this remarkable structure. The current lighthouse, completed in 1882, replaced earlier towers — one of which, Smeaton’s Tower, now stands proudly on Plymouth Hoe as a monument to early lighthouse engineering. The reef itself has claimed many ships over the centuries, and seeing the light still standing strong out there gives you a real sense of respect for those who built and maintain it.
The Typhoon is a comfortable and steady vessel, ideal for open-water navigation. There’s plenty of room on deck for photos, sightseeing, or simply taking it all in. Every trip is weather and tide dependent, and I’ll always pick the best conditions to make sure it’s a safe and enjoyable run.
The Eddystone Lighthouse trip is perfect for anyone who loves the sea — a bit of history, plenty of fresh air, and some of the best views Cornwall has to offer. Whether you’re a visitor to Looe or a local looking to see your coastline from a new perspective, it’s a proper Cornish experience from start to finish.
